I will not say more.  This is a long film but will tell you all you need to reassure you that Cancer can be cured.

Ok so you’ve been diagnosed with cancer and your bottom has fallen out of your world. I have been there. What I found was my doctors and breast cancer nurses were all very supportive but non of them had any information they could share with me regarding alternatives to what they were proposing for my treatment or what I could do to support myself regardless of my choices.

Having been offered Tamoxifen to keep my estrogen and progesterone receptive cancer from returning and refusing to take this due to the potential side effects I stepped out of the box and started my own journey where I discovered there is a wealth of information out there about alternative routes to cancer treatment and contrary to what most doctors want you to believe there are lots of people living and breathing who have cured their cancers naturally. So here is some information I have found in books, on the Internet and through experience, that I am happy to share with you. If I put everything I knew down you would be reading for a long time but hopefully this is a great start for you on your own journey back to health regardless of whether you are going down the traditional NHS route for your treatment or are taking a different path. I wrote this document as I wished I had easily had access to all this information at the time of my own diagnosis. It would have saved me months of my life researching when I could have been fully focused on my own recovery.

So with all this in mind the first thing I would recommend to anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer is to purchase the book Anticancer by Dr David Servan-Schreiber the updated edition. This also applies if you have a history of cancer in your family.

David was a doctor, a celebrated psychiatrist and neuroscientist, but after his first brain tumour, he made cancer his life’s work. His mission was to tell people that by making a few simple lifestyle changes they would have a far better chance of staying well. He wrote two bestselling books about his ideas that were translated into 35 languages.

In 2005, he wrote Healing Without Freud or Prozac detailing a drug-free approach to treating stress, anxiety and depression, I can totally recommend it. In 2007, Anticancer: A New Way of Life was designed to help readers reduce the chance of developing the disease by describing the preventive regime he adopted after surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy for his first tumour. It’s also of benefit to anyone with a cancer diagnosis. It’s my number one book.

No Sugar!

Sugar feeds all cancer. Ideally you should cut down on your sugar consumption and if you have to have fruit, keep it to the low glycemic kind ie blueberries, raspberries, strawberries. I use Xylitol as a sugar substitute, it’s made from bark, is natural and not carcinogenic. It does all sorts of good things for you like stops tooth decay! It also kills candida, which is great if you suffer from this but not so good if you want to bake using yeast as Xylitol will kill the yeast. You can buy it in most health food shops and even Waitrose has it. Some people prefer Stevia, another natural sweetener; it’s what works for you. Try to avoid like the plague anything made with fructose corn syrup or aspartame they really are poisons.

Dr Patrick Quillin, PHD, RD, CNS says ‘”during the last 10 years I have worked with more than 500 cancer patients as director of nutrition for Cancer Treatment Centres of America in Tulsa, Okla. It puzzles me why the simple concept ‘sugar feeds cancer’ can be so dramatically overlooked as part of a comprehensive cancer treatment plan.

Of the 4 million cancer patients being treated in America today, hardly any are offered any scientifically guided nutrition therapy beyond being told to “just eat good foods.” Most patients I work with arrive with a complete lack of nutritional advice. I believe many cancer patients would have a major improvement in their outcome if they controlled the supply of cancer’s preferred fuel, glucose. By slowing the cancer’s growth, patients allow their immune systems and medical debulking therapies — chemotherapy, radiation and surgery to reduce the bulk of the tumour mass — to catch up to the disease.

Hence, cancer therapies should encompass regulating blood-glucose levels via diet, supplements, non-oral solutions for cachectic patients who lose their appetite, medication, exercise, gradual weight loss and stress reduction.”

Many of my friends who have had chemotherapy are shocked to see vending machines filled with chocolate and fizzy drinks outside the areas they receive their treatment and don’t get me started on the NHS leaflet with diet recommendations whilst having chemotherapy!

Try also to keep away from too many starches. A new study I saw said eating too many starchy foods (potatoes, white pasta, white bread) has shown to increase a return of breast cancer by up to 40% They act as sugar in the body and as we have just established sugar feeds cancer and causes insulin levels to rise which not only feeds cancer cells but causes the body to make estrogen. Not something you want if you have had estrogen + breast cancer.

Xylitol

Meat and Dairy

Try to refrain from eating too much meat and dairy. It’s full of hormones especially estrogen unless you’re eating organic. Even then meat and dairy are acid forming so not great for you if you have had cancer or have cancer. Cancer and many other diseases thrive in an acidic body. Consider at least eating only organic and reducing the amount you consume.

With that in mind you should consider helping your body be as alkaline as possible, limiting acid forming foods and consuming lots of alkalizing foods like green veg, green juices/smoothies! Less meat, dairy and wheat, more green veggies and brown rice etc. You can get PH strips to text your acidity from Amazon or Boots. Mine was shocking when I first started making big changes to my lifestyle and diet. Now it’s far better.

Alcohol

Around 3,100 cases of breast cancer each year in the UK are linked to alcohol. Regularly drinking a pint of premium lager or a large glass of wine (three units of alcohol) a day or less can increase the risk of mouth, throat, oesophageal, breast and bowel cancers.

The effect of each unit of alcohol is greater on cancers of the head and neck than on breast cancer, but because breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and so many women drink small amounts of alcohol regularly, a large number of women are affected – Taken from cancerreasurch.org

A 2009 study found that drinking even a few alcoholic beverages per week (three to four drinks) increased the risk of breast cancer coming back in women who’d been diagnosed with early-stage disease.

The bottom line is that regularly drinking alcohol can harm your health, even if you don’t binge drink or get drunk. All types of alcohol count. One drink equals 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor.

Focus on a plant based diet

The best diet for preventing or fighting cancer is a predominantly plant-based diet that includes a variety of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. A plant-based diet means eating mostly foods that come from plants: vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, and beans.

The less processed these foods are—the less they’ve been cooked, peeled, mixed with other ingredients, stripped of their nutrients, or otherwise altered from the way they came out of the ground—the better.

Plants have less fat, more fibre, and more cancer-fighting nutrients. These three elements work together to support your immune system and help your body fight off cancer.

Not all fats are created equal!

Don’t think just because you have had cancer you have to cut all fat out of your diet. Not all fats are bad for you; some will actually help in your fight to regain your health.

Fats that increase cancer risk – The two most damaging fats are saturated fats and trans fats. Saturated fats are found mainly in animal products such as red meat, whole milk dairy products, and eggs. Trans fats, also called partially hydrogenated oils, are created by adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid and less likely to spoil—which is very good for food

manufacturers, and very bad for you.

Fats that decrease cancer risk – The best fats are unsaturated fats, which come from plant sources and are liquid at room temperature. Primary sources include olive oil, canola oil, nuts, and avocados. Also focus on omega-3 fatty acids, which fight inflammation and support brain and heart health. Good sources include salmon, tuna, and flaxseeds.

Coconut Oil – Coconut oil, being mainly a saturated fat, is able to withstand higher temperatures than other oils, making it one of the best oils for cooking. Use organic extra-virgin coconut oil for the best quality. I only cook with Coconut oil and save my extra-virgin olive oil for my salads.

Dr Mercola says:

“Extra-virgin olive oil is the best monounsaturated fat and works great as a salad dressing. However, olive oil should not be used for cooking. Due to its chemical structure, heat makes olive oil susceptible to oxidative damage. So for cooking, I use coconut oil exclusively.

And polyunsaturated fats, which include common vegetable oils such as corn, soy, safflower, sunflower and canola, are absolutely the worst oils to cook with.

Why?

Three primary reasons:

1) Cooking your food in omega-6 vegetable oils produces a variety of very toxic chemicals, as well as forming trans-fats. Frying destroys the antioxidants in oil, actually oxidizing the oil, which causes even worse problems for your body than trans-fats.

2) Most vegetable oils are GM (genetically modified), including more than 90 percent of soy, corn and canola oils.

3) Vegetable oils contribute to the overabundance of damaged omega-6 fats in your diet, throwing off your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. Nearly everyone in Western society consumes far too many omega-6 fats — about 100 times more than a century ago — and insufficient omega 3 fats, which contributes to numerous chronic degenerative diseases.

There is only one oil that is stable enough to withstand the heat of cooking, and that’s coconut oil. So, do yourself a favor and ditch all those “healthy oil wannabes,” and replace them with a large jar of fresh, organic, heart-supporting coconut oil.”

Green Tea

Rich in polyphenols, including catechins, which reduce the growth of the new vessels needed for tumor growth and metastases, this is a great addition to your daily hot drink regime. Coffee, even decaf coffee is acid forming in the body, so consider replacing it with green tea. It is also a powerful antioxidant and detoxifier. It activates enzymes in the liver that eliminate toxins from the body and is said to facilitate the death of cancer cells by apoptosis. In laboratory tests it has been shown to enhance the effect so radiotherapy on cancer cells.

Seaweed

Consider eating seaweed. Molecules in seaweed can slow cancer growth, especially breast, prostate, skin and colon cancer. Fucoidan and Kombu seaweed help provoke cell death by apoptosis and stimulate immune cells.
Also a healthy thyroid helps keep breast cancer away. Your thyroid can suffer from chemo and radiation therapy so any support you give it can help. Seaweed is full of natural iodine. I buy the organic sea salad from a place in Ireland over the Internet. I place a handful in water just before making my smoothie. It rehydrates and then I rinse it off and toss it in with my veggies, avocado, green powder, hemp protein powder, chia seeds (super, super food) blueberries, rice milk and water. Then I blend the living daylights out of it!

Ginger

Ginger root is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It acts against certain cancer cells and helps reduce the creation of new blood vessels. A ginger infusion can help alleviate nausea cased by chemo or radiation therapy.

Garlic, Onions, Leeks, Shallots and Chives

Garlic has been used medicinally for centuries and the sulphur compounds from this family of vegetables reduce the carcinogenic effects of over cooked meat. They promote apoptosis )cell death) in colon, breast, lung and prostate cancer as well as leukemia. Epidemiological studies suggest a reduction in kidney and prostate cancer in people who consume the most garlic.

There are lots of great books on the market that tell you exactly what to eat and not to eat to prevent and heal cancer. Amazon is full of them but Anticancer covers most of the bases. I often buy my books second hand on Amazon or EBay to save money. You can get some books for less than a pound!

SUPPLEMENTS

VIT D

Vitamin D has shown preventative benefits for many diseases, including heart disease and diabetes, and can even reduce chronic pain. But when it comes to cancer, vitamin D is its worst enemy! Theories linking vitamin D deficiency to cancer have been tested and confirmed in more than 200 epidemiological studies, and understanding of its physiological basis stems from more than 2,500 laboratory studies.

Vitamin D has powerful effects when it comes to breast cancer to the degree that breast cancer is being described as a “vitamin D deficiency syndrome.” Of course, other lifestyle factors are also important in preventing cancer, such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, and managing stress. However, vitamin D’s critical importance seems to grow with every emerging

study.

The best way to optimize your vitamin D level is through sun exposure or a safe tanning bed as that virtually eliminates any risk of overdose. As a very general guide, you need to expose about 40 percent of your entire body to the sun for approximately 20 minutes between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm, when the sun is at its zenith.

remember that if you take oral vitamin D, you
also need to boost your vitamin K2, either
through your food choices or a supplement.
Vitamin K2 deficiency is actually what produces the symptoms of vitamin D toxicity, which includes inappropriate calcification that can lead to hardening of your arteries.

Sunlight is important on so many levels not least for getting your daily dose of vitamin D so get out there. Combine it with a walk and you are killing two birds with one stone regarding protecting your health.

VIT B12

The vitamin B12 is crucial to life and to general health, being involved in almost every cellular system in the body. Over 300 enzymatic reactions use this vitamin in some way. Apart from dementia, fatigue and heart problems, some cancers including breast cancer are known to be associated with lowered levels of this vitamin.

In recent years scientists have become more and more knowledgeable and concerned about Vitamin B-12, particularly for people over the age of 50 and/or those on strict vegetarian diets. Some 72 per cent of vegetarians are deficient in this vitamin, as it is most readily found in meat, cheese and eggs.

Lowered B-12 levels are not so much about what we eat, but far more to do with our ability to release the vitamin from our food. Lowered levels of beneficial bacteria, coupled with increased levels of microbes and particularly Helicobacter pylori weaken our ability to release the vitamin from the food we consume, especially as we age. This is true of other essential B vitamins too.

A particular concern is with those cancer patients who rush to change their diet as part of their personal cancer therapy programme, and become vegan or vegetarian. This can result in a further lowering of B-12 levels and it could be that their cancer was already associated with lowered levels of B-12. People who change their diet in this way may actually be compounding a problem. In these cases supplementation is almost certainly essential if only as insurance.

Also chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery all employ drugs and antibiotics, which can worsen the imbalance of beneficial bacteria and further, reduce the digestion and absorption of vitamin B-12. Supplementation in the short term with vitamin B-12 and other B vitamins like folic acid should be considered, along with supplementation with multi-strain probiotics seems equally important.

Q10 UBIQUINOL

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is important for your body’s daily functions and is actually used by every cell in your body. Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant that stimulates the heart muscles and stimulates the immune system in several different ways, mainly through higher antibody levels, and greater numbers and/or activities of the cancer fighting T-cells.

CoQ10 is required for your cells to produce energy, and is an integral part of helping cells take fat and other substances and convert them into usable energy.

DIM – Diindolylmethane

Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower and kale, produce a natural compound called diindolylmethane (DIM) in the body during the digestion process. Studies have shown that DIM can slow the growth of tumor cells. It also may be able to kill cancer cells by preventing the growth of the blood vessels tumors need to grow and spread, and acting like an anti- estrogen therapy in hormone-sensitive tumors. For these reasons, scientists think that DIM may be an effective breast cancer treatment. The National Cancer Institute is about to start a trial is to compare the safety and effectiveness of DIM to a placebo in breast cancer patients and in women at high risk of developing breast cancer.

DIM forces estrogen to break down into a “good” (protective, non-cancer

promoting) type of estrogen, a conversion which occurs in the liver. Scientists believe it is DIM’s ability to influence the liver to make more of the “good” estrogen and less of the “bad” that may play the biggest role in lowering the risk of breast cancer.

CDG – calcium D-glucarate

Also found naturally in cruciferous vegetables, as well as fruits, such as apples, oranges, and grapefruit. The liver manufactures a substance called glucuronic acid, which binds to toxins, including “bad” estrogen, deactivating them. The enzyme, beta-glucuronidase, can interfere, thus split the toxins off the glucuronic acid, reactivating them. Researchers have found that people with a high amount of that enzyme in their blood have an increased risk of various cancers, particularly the hormone-dependent ones. SERRAPEPTASE – great for postoperative healing.

I would highly recommend you investigate and take Serrapeptase. Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme that digests inflammations, scars (non-living tissue), blood clots, cysts, and arterial plaque and inflammation in all forms. One simple recommendation I give when I counsel my patients on nutrition is to encourage them to consume plenty of probiotic and prebiotic foods or take a probiotic supplement every day as a means to help support their gut health.

WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS AND PREBIOTICS?

Probiotics are edible products containing ‘good’ bacteria that normally live in our intestines. You can either consume probiotic rich foods (kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt, miso soup, natto, pickles, tempeh, spirulina algae, etc.) or take a high quality probiotic supplement with numerous species of ‘good’ bacteria.

Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that serve as the food to keep your ‘good’ bacteria healthy. You can either consume prebiotic rich foods (asparagus, garlic, leek, onion, artichoke, etc.) or take a supplement.

I typically recommend a combined approach for my patients- consume foods rich in probiotics & prebiotics and take a high quality probiotic (with billions of colonies of multiple species of ‘good’ bacteria) combined with a prebiotic supplement.”

Talking of probiotics and gut flora. I have also read in the book The Body Ecology Diet by Donna Gates and from various other sources that many alternative doctors think there is a big link between candida and cancer. Getting rid of candida is really difficult, as you may know. I was diagnosed with it over 20 years ago and have never been able to get rid of the bugger. Anyway I came across this article about a supplement that kills candida with no die off.

CURCUMIN (Turmeric)

Here is some information about the amazing properties of Curcumin.

Curcumin has many serious fans in the fight to beat cancer – UCLA, the MD Anderson Cancer Center, the Emory School of Medicine and Tufts to name but four important American Cancer Centers. It is a powerful antioxidant that is also anti-viral and anti-bacterial; plus it seems to have great potential to fight cancer, especially colorectal cancer. All people wishing to build an anti-cancer programme should think seriously about including curcumin within it.

The anti-cancer action of curcumin;

Importantly, the spice can stop the action of the enzyme COX-2 known to produce negative, inflammation causing localised enzymes (eicosanoids). Such inflammation is a known precursor to cancer.

STRESS MANAGEMENT

Stress fuels cancer by triggering a ‘master switch’ gene known as ATF3, which is expressed in response to stressful conditions in all types of cells. This allows the disease to spread, according to new research by Ohio State University.

Women who suffer stress are twice as likely to develop breast cancer, a study in Sweden also suggests. Worries about work and family, which lead to tension, fear, anxiety and sleep disturbance, appear to raise the risk of suffering the disease later in life.

The damaging effect of stress is on a par with recently documented dangers of taking HRT – which also doubles the risk of breast cancer. Doctors from the Sahlgrenska Academy in Gothenburg, Sweden, carried out a 24-year study of almost 1,500 women.

The group of healthy women aged 38 to 60 were examined by doctors 35 years ago, during 1968 and 1969. They were also questioned about their stress levels over the previous five years. Women had follow-up examinations during 1974, 1980 and 1992. After the final check-ups, doctors compared which women had suffered more breast cancer. Those who had reported stress for a month or more during the five years preceding the start of the study had double the risk. Other factors which would almost certainly increase the risk of disease – including smoking, weight, alcohol intake, age of first pregnancy and age at the menopause – were all taken into account. Yet still the increase in breast cancer risk remained, with stress the only obvious causal factor.

Hundreds of studies have measured how stress impacts our immune systems and causes disease. At Ohio State University, researcher Dr. Ron Glaser, Ph.D., found that students under pressure had slower-healing wounds and took longer to produce immune system cells that kill invading organisms. Other studies have gone as far as to show those women who experienced traumatic life events or losses in previous years had significantly higher rates of breast cancer.

Cancer has many more causes than only being initiated by stressful events. But it does look like they are much more important in initiating cancer than anyone had previously thought. What is undoubtedly true is that stress knocks down the immune system significantly, which could certainly translate into accelerated growth of cancer cells. Continued stress from unresolved traumatic events inhibits your body’s ability to fight cancer.

How can we help relieve stress?

Wow! Those previous paragraphs were probably enough to push you over the edge and stress you out on their own! I am just ‘stressing’ a point (no pun intended) that anyone with any kind of cancer diagnosis or who is looking at prevention needs to address their relationship with stress and how they handle it. It will improve not only your life’s expectancy but it’s quality. It will also help your relationships with everyone around you. I personally really believe that it’s all very well and good addressing your diet and supplement regime etc. but that’s not going to be half as effective if you don’t take a long hard look at how you cope with stress.

Meditation

Having a strong and centered mind can only help improve your health and your ability to cope with what life is throwing at you at this time. Daily mediation practice can help this even if it’s only for 10 minutes.

Meditation

· In a study of 60 breast cancer survivors, women who practiced meditation reduced the number and severity of hot flashes and also reported improvements in mood and sleep.

· A study of 63 people with rheumatoid arthritis found that mindfulness meditation helped to improve quality of life and reduce psychological distress.

· A study of 298 college students found that transcendental meditation helped students reduce stress and improve coping strategies.

· A “meta-analysis” of 10 studies found that mindfulness meditation improves the overall mental health of cancer patients.

Meditation prevents stress from getting into your system and releases accumulated stress that is already in your system.

Exercise

The word I dread and I still don’t do enough of this myself! However studies show

women who exercise for 30 minutes at least 3 times a week survive for longer than those who don’t. That’s quite shocking and just typing this makes me want to get off my lazy bum and get out for a big long walk.

Dr Brian Clement, co director of the Hippocrates Health Institute in the US says

‘The body heals eight times faster when you exercise regularly’

Exercise helps stimulate your lymph system. The primary function of the lymphatic system is to transport lymph, a clear, colorless fluid containing white blood cells that helps rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials.

We want that lymph flooding our body with wonderful white blood cells and removing toxins. If you don’t want to take up a gym membership or Zumba or a dance class or even can’t be bothered to go for a 30 minute walk, consider getting a rebounder.

Rebounding can cause a state of non-disease-induced neutrophillia, which is an increase in the number of white cells circulating through the body, particularly neutrophils, which are one of the types of white cells most responsible for destroying cancer cells. While gentle bouncing may possibly cause a slight increase in neutrophils, and jogging a little more, by sprinting in place for just one minute on the rebounder you can cause your neutrophil count to as much as double what it normally is. Parabens

If you have had breast cancer or are at risk of it you should try not use any products that contain anything that ends with the word paraben. If you’ve been diagnosed you may be aware of this already. I had to chuck literally every single cosmetic I owned out as they all contained parabens, even my Simple wipes and my Aveda products and my Origins face creams. Just because it’s marketed as ‘natural’ doesn’t’ mean it actually is. Check your ingredients.

I use REN, green people and various others now. There are lots of great organic and paraben free brands out there and many of them of them are really reasonable regarding price. Waitrose stocks paraben free creams and lotions and shampoos and conditioners. Amazon have tons of brands on line.

Parabens mimic estrogen in the body and have been found actually residing in breast tumors!

Chlorella and Spiriulina

Spirulina is another form of algae that is sometimes confused with Chlorella. The fundamental difference between spirulina and chlorella is that spirulina is many thousands of years older and does not possess the hard cell wall that makes chlorella closer to being a plant than algae.

According to a study done in China,10 selenium-infused spirulina inhibited the growth of MCF-7 breast cancer cells but it’s also a great detoxifier when it comes to radiation exposure. Breast cancer leaves you exposed to so much radiation with the mammograms required. I’ve had many over the years and now I am expected to have one every year for the rest of my life! The toxic effects of mammogram radiation are finally being acknowledged as a significant factor in the development of breast cancer. Several recent studies have clearly shown that breast cancer screenings may be causing women more harm than good.

Mammograms use ionizing radiation at a relatively high dose, which can contribute to the mutations that can lead to breast cancer. You can get as much radiation from one mammogram as you would from 1,000 chest X-rays. Mammography also compresses your breasts tightly, which can lead to a dangerous spread of cancerous cells, should they exist. Dr. Samuel Epstein, one of the world’s top cancer experts, has stated:

“The premenopausal breast is highly sensitive to radiation, each 1 rad exposure increasing breast cancer risk by about 1 percent, with a cumulative 10 percent increased risk for each breast over a decade’s screening.”

Other Methods of Elimination

Taking Epsom salt baths helps draw out toxins from the skin. You need to put about a kilogram of them into your bath (you can buy them on eBay) It’s best to do this in the evening as not only does it draw out toxins it totally relaxes muscles and helps you sleep like a baby.

If you can, get an enema kit (Ebay or Amazon) as this is also great method for getting rid of toxins from your body. Consider having a professional colonic or two or three!

According to the British Dental Health Foundation, women with severe periodontal disease and missing teeth may be as much as 11 times more likely than women with healthy teeth and gums to develop breast cancer. The Karolinska Institute in Sweden examined the tooth and gum health of more than 3,000 women, 41 of whom developed breast cancer. These women were more likely to have experienced severe gum disease and tooth loss. Gum disease has been associated with not just breast cancer but also oral cancer, heart disease, diabetes and pregnancy complications.

Have regular check ups and trips to the hygienist and if you can remove replace mercury fillings with white fillings.

Dental amalgams can increase your risk of cancer in a variety of ways. Mercury is a known carcinogen (cancer-causing agent), and exposure to it can significantly impair your body’s immune system which is your primary defense against cancer, as well as many other diseases. RADIOTHERAPY Support whilst undergoing it.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, HBO, can help minimise side effects and even restore healthy tissue by promoting healing. The Royal Marsden is currently undertaking clinical trials, although research has been reported in the USA already. Whilst it seems advantageous to use it during radiation therapy, research also shows its benefits at a later stage too. It’s used to treat a number of side effects caused by radiotherapy including healing post radiotherapy wounds. The treatment floods the body with oxygen.

Selenium, isoflavones (citrus or soy) and astragalus, a Chinese herb, have all been shown in research studies to make radiotherapy more effective. Indeed MD Anderson Cancer Centre have research stating that astragalus ́doubles survival times ́ if taken with radiotherapy. Vitamin D is increasingly recommended by US and some UK hospitals and also seems to improve the success of the treatment programme..

Also a study from the University of Pennsylvania has shown consuming Flaxseed

reduces harm and can even repair damaged tissue. Recent research suggests a calorie restoration of up to 40% can improve the outcome of radiotherapy along with avoiding animal fats, dairy and glucose whilst eating a rainbow diet to nourish your body.

After radiation wash the area only in cold water and apply aloe vera gel also in clinical trials the herb calendula (you can buy it in a cream from any health food shop) beat the recommended drug used for such burns. Consider taking the supplement carnitine if fatigue is a problem. Italian doctors have identified the cause of fatigue during radiotherapy as low levels of carnitine circulating in the blood stream.

To help alleviate nausea from radiotherapy or chemotherapy an infusion of fresh ginger has been show to help. I like to mix it with lemon and a small amount of honey.

CHEMOTHERAPY

Here is some great information taken from the Cancer Active web site re how to support yourself when facing or going through chemotherapy.

1. Make sure you know everything about the chemotherapy drug your doctor is recommending. You will find new drugs covered on this web site in our A to Z guide (click here). The very latest cancer treatments can be obtained on the Medcastwebsite:

2. Ask your doctor why he/she is recommending chemotherapy. If they had cancer, would they treat themselves with this drug? How long have they been prescribing this treatment and to how many people? What are their expectations of this treatment for you? Are there other options, which could produce the same results?

3. What has the success rate been? Does the doctor expect the tumour to go completely, or just reduce in size? Do they think your cancer might become active again after treatment? If so, after what period of time? What else can be tried if the chemo doesn ́t work? Are there any clinical trials open, which may be suitable for you?

4. What are the risks in having the treatment? How will your doctor assess its effectiveness? What are the worst reported and also the least reported, side effects during and after this treatment?

5. Ask your doctor what action he will take if you are losing a lot of weight and

obviously not getting sufficient nutrition. Also, if you want to use herbal and natural remedies to help with the side effects, would he be prepared to work with you and discuss suitable treatments? ICON integrative Cancer and Oncology News’s integrative nurse Patricia Peat suggests consulting a holistic practitioner, nutritionist or medical herbalist as soon as possible to have a settled regime before commencing chemotherapy. But remember to tell your specialist what complementary treatments you are taking/having in case of possible reactions between the treatments. If he tells you that something is contra-indicated though, ask for the research evidence.

9. Next stage – During Chemotherapy, drink up to three litres of glass bottled or reverse osmosis filtered water a day and take your anti-sickness medication regularly to prevent nausea building up. 11. Try to avoid all cows ́ dairy, saturated and polyunsaturated fats and spicy foods.
12. Antioxidant supplementation produces huge controversy. You are encouraged to eat lots of fruit and vegetables but then, at the same time, the oncologist says that antioxidant supplements will protect the cancer cells during chemo. As chemo- drugs become more targeted this argument should end. However there are a number of natural compounds that have been shown in research to increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy and improve survival rates. These include astragalus, vitamin D, green tea and medicinal mushrooms. Curcumin, cod liver oil, ginger, garlic and aloe vera will all calm down inflammation and bad eicosdanoid production. Eat whole greens and grains, seeds and nuts – and take vitamin K, a B complex and a multi-strain probiotic.

13. On the subject of medicinal mushrooms, Dr. Julian Kenyon, from the Dove

Clinic, advises protecting the cell mediated immune function with them. He says, “The one to take is Coriolus (as a powder), 4 grams, three times a day.” MGN-3 works in a similar immune boosting way. But these are expensive. You should also try to avoid an acid body.

14. Avoid all alcohol as your liver doesn’t need any more toxins. It needs strengthening. Natural herbs such as 200mgs of milk thistle (Silybum marianum) and soya lecithin in research help to protect and help to “defat it. Supporting of the liver function is also helped by the use of N-Acetyl Cysteine, an amino acid which raises glutathione levels and helps the livers detoxification pathways. Focus on magnesium-rich foods. 40 per cent of the population is deficient.

15. Ask a cranial osteopath or acupuncturist to rebalance the energy flow around the body and help with nausea. Try yoga too.

16. Force yourself to walk around and take exercise, even though you probably won’t want to. This does not have to be strenuous but it does need to be daily according to a number of recent research studies. Yoga and Tai chi are not strenuous but have massive benefits even when it’s the first time you do them. As a minimum do 20 minutes deep breathing exercises every day. Get out in the fresh air.

17. Astragalus, Cats claw, Echinacea and Cassie tea (Essiac) can all be taken after treatment is finished, to re-stimulate the immune system. Keep yeasts in check with Pau Darco, oregano, cinnamon and wormwood, plus a multi-strain probiotic. Adults can also take wild yam to boost their DHEA levels; everyone can eat salads and carbohydrate in the evening (carbohydrates and salads aid seratonin production, which in turn stimulates melatonin levels and helps sleep and fight hormonally driven cancers).

18. Fatigue comes with every chemo treatment! Yes you can and should rest. Moreover, research by Italian scientists has identified that it is linked to loss of carnitine in the blood as a result of the chemotherapy toxins. In tests (albeit involving just 50) patients given a high energy drink containing levocarnitine 90% of the patients no longer felt tired just a week after starting the drink.

Check out a book called The Healing Code. It’s very interesting and I have found it really helpful. It has over 640 5 star reviews on Amazon.com. It’s about addressing the hidden cellular memories of past traumatic experience that cause disease and using our own body’s energy fields to help heal these cellular memories. One of the best sites for support I have found is Kris Carr’s Crazy Sexy Life site. She was diagnosed at 23 with a rare incurable stage four cancer of her liver and lungs and decided to deal with it alternatively and is just inspirational. Dr Lorraine Day

Healing Cancer World Summit

I highly recommend you take a look at the Healing Cancer World Summit 2012 web site. Yes I know it’s now 2014 but they interviewed some of the world’s most well known traditional and alternative doctors, practitioners and survivors who are taking an alternative approach to healing cancer with amazing results. Whist it was happening it was free to listen to the interviews. Now it’s over you have to pay $49/£30 to download all the interviews and extra content. You also get to give all the content for free to 3 other friends, as they want it shared out there. Also many studies have shown that above all else stress is one of the biggest causes of Cancer and many other diseases. Be kind to yourself. Look at when and where you get stressed and try and do things differently. Consider mediation, yoga, tai chi, going for walks in the countryside, giving yourself permission to just relax and watch funny movies or read a book. Try and cull people from your life who bring you down, drain you or are unsupportive and learn to PUT YOU FIRST!

Finally although all this information is relevant, it’s important to listen to yourself and trust yourself. You know what’s best for you. Take time and space to hear your own inner voice. Do what you can or what appeals to you from the information above but listen to your own inner guide on what’s best for you. Every human being is different and every cancer and cause of the cancer is different. Trust your own instincts about what you feel resonates with you and don’t worry about what doesn’t. It’s very hard to do it all and if you are going down the ‘alternative route’ you don’t want doing that to cause your body and soul just as much stress as heading off for chemo or to the chemist for Tamoxifen. Whichever route you go down ideally the information in this document can give you some guidance regarding what’s out there to support you on your journey.

I really hope some of this helps. It took me a very long time and lots of hours of reading and research to find this all out, let alone to write it all down. I wanted to save you this time when time is so precious and now you will be armed with information that can really support you and your loved ones and can help you make the decisions that are right for you. A DIFFERENT PATH

Support and information for anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, or any other cancer and for women wanting an alternative to Tamoxifen. By Claire Fearon.

Ok so you’ve been diagnosed with cancer and your bottom has fallen out of your world. I have been there. What I found was my doctors and breast cancer nurses were all very supportive but non of them had any information they could share with me regarding alternatives to what they were proposing for my treatment or what I could do to support myself regardless of my choices.

Having been offered Tamoxifen to keep my estrogen and progesterone receptive cancer from returning and refusing to take this due to the potential side effects I stepped out of the box and started my own journey where I discovered there is a wealth of information out there about alternative routes to cancer treatment and contrary to what most doctors want you to believe there are lots of people living and breathing who have cured their cancers naturally. So here is some information I have found in books, on the Internet and through experience, that I am happy to share with you. If I put everything I knew down you would be reading for a long time but hopefully this is a great start for you on your own journey back to health regardless of whether you are going down the traditional NHS route for your treatment or are taking a different path. I wrote this document as I wished I had easily had access to all this information at the time of my own diagnosis. It would have saved me months of my life researching when I could have been fully focused on my own recovery.

So with all this in mind the first thing I would recommend to anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer is to purchase the book Anticancer by Dr David Servan-Schreiber the updated edition. This also applies if you have a history of cancer in your family.

David was a doctor, a celebrated psychiatrist and neuroscientist, but after his first brain tumour, he made cancer his life’s work. His mission was to tell people that by making a few simple lifestyle changes they would have a far better chance of staying well. He wrote two bestselling books about his ideas that were translated into 35 languages.

In 2005, he wrote Healing Without Freud or Prozac detailing a drug-free approach to treating stress, anxiety and depression, I can totally recommend it. In 2007, Anticancer: A New Way of Life was designed to help readers reduce the chance of developing the disease by describing the preventive regime he adopted after surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy for his first tumour. It’s also of benefit to anyone with a cancer diagnosis. It’s my number one book.

LET FOOD BE THY MEDICINE AND MEDICINE THY FOOD (HIPPOCRATES)

No Sugar!

Sugar feeds all cancer. Ideally you should cut down on your sugar consumption and if you have to have fruit, keep it to the low glycemic kind ie blueberries, raspberries, strawberries. I use Xylitol as a sugar substitute, it’s made from bark, is natural and not carcinogenic. It does all sorts of good things for you like stops tooth decay! It also kills candida, which is great if you suffer from this but not so good if you want to bake using yeast as Xylitol will kill the yeast. You can buy it in most health food shops and even Waitrose has it. Some people prefer Stevia, another natural sweetener; it’s what works for you. Try to avoid like the plague anything made with fructose corn syrup or aspartame they really are poisons.

Dr Patrick Quillin, PHD, RD, CNS says ‘”during the last 10 years I have worked with more than 500 cancer patients as director of nutrition for Cancer Treatment Centres of America in Tulsa, Okla. It puzzles me why the simple concept ‘sugar feeds cancer’ can be so dramatically overlooked as part of a comprehensive cancer treatment plan.

Of the 4 million cancer patients being treated in America today, hardly any are offered any scientifically guided nutrition therapy beyond being told to “just eat good foods.” Most patients I work with arrive with a complete lack of nutritional advice. I believe many cancer patients would have a major improvement in their outcome if they controlled the supply of cancer’s preferred fuel, glucose. By slowing the cancer’s growth, patients allow their immune systems and medical debulking therapies — chemotherapy, radiation and surgery to reduce the bulk of the tumour mass — to catch up to the disease.

Hence, cancer therapies should encompass regulating blood-glucose levels via diet, supplements, non-oral solutions for cachectic patients who lose their appetite, medication, exercise, gradual weight loss and stress reduction.”

Many of my friends who have had chemotherapy are shocked to see vending machines filled with chocolate and fizzy drinks outside the areas they receive their treatment and don’t get me started on the NHS leaflet with diet recommendations whilst having chemotherapy!

Try also to keep away from too many starches. A new study I saw said eating too many starchy foods (potatoes, white pasta, white bread) has shown to increase a return of breast cancer by up to 40% They act as sugar in the body and as we have just established sugar feeds cancer and causes insulin levels to rise which not only feeds cancer cells but causes the body to make estrogen. Not something you want if you have had estrogen + breast cancer.

Xylitol

Meat and Dairy

Try to refrain from eating too much meat and dairy. It’s full of hormones especially estrogen unless you’re eating organic. Even then meat and dairy are acid forming so not great for you if you have had cancer or have cancer. Cancer and many other diseases thrive in an acidic body. Consider at least eating only organic and reducing the amount you consume.

With that in mind you should consider helping your body be as alkaline as possible, limiting acid forming foods and consuming lots of alkalizing foods like green veg, green juices/smoothies! Less meat, dairy and wheat, more green veggies and brown rice etc. You can get PH strips to text your acidity from Amazon or Boots. Mine was shocking when I first started making big changes to my lifestyle and diet. Now it’s far better.

Alcohol

Around 3,100 cases of breast cancer each year in the UK are linked to alcohol. Regularly drinking a pint of premium lager or a large glass of wine (three units of alcohol) a day or less can increase the risk of mouth, throat, oesophageal, breast and bowel cancers.

The effect of each unit of alcohol is greater on cancers of the head and neck than on breast cancer, but because breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and so many women drink small amounts of alcohol regularly, a large number of women are affected – Taken from cancerreasurch.org

A 2009 study found that drinking even a few alcoholic beverages per week (three to four drinks) increased the risk of breast cancer coming back in women who’d been diagnosed with early-stage disease.

The bottom line is that regularly drinking alcohol can harm your health, even if you don’t binge drink or get drunk. All types of alcohol count. One drink equals 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor.

Focus on a plant based diet

The best diet for preventing or fighting cancer is a predominantly plant-based diet that includes a variety of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. A plant-based diet means eating mostly foods that come from plants: vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, and beans.

The less processed these foods are—the less they’ve been cooked, peeled, mixed with other ingredients, stripped of their nutrients, or otherwise altered from the way they came out of the ground—the better.

Plants have less fat, more fibre, and more cancer-fighting nutrients. These three elements work together to support your immune system and help your body fight off cancer.

Not all fats are created equal!

Don’t think just because you have had cancer you have to cut all fat out of your diet. Not all fats are bad for you; some will actually help in your fight to regain your health.

Fats that increase cancer risk – The two most damaging fats are saturated fats and trans fats. Saturated fats are found mainly in animal products such as red meat, whole milk dairy products, and eggs. Trans fats, also called partially hydrogenated oils, are created by adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid and less likely to spoil—which is very good for food

manufacturers, and very bad for you.

Fats that decrease cancer risk – The best fats are unsaturated fats, which come from plant sources and are liquid at room temperature. Primary sources include olive oil, canola oil, nuts, and avocados. Also focus on omega-3 fatty acids, which fight inflammation and support brain and heart health. Good sources include salmon, tuna, and flaxseeds.

Coconut Oil – Coconut oil, being mainly a saturated fat, is able to withstand higher temperatures than other oils, making it one of the best oils for cooking. Use organic extra-virgin coconut oil for the best quality. I only cook with Coconut oil and save my extra-virgin olive oil for my salads.

“Extra-virgin olive oil is the best monounsaturated fat and works great as a salad dressing. However, olive oil should not be used for cooking. Due to its chemical structure, heat makes olive oil susceptible to oxidative damage. So for cooking, I use coconut oil exclusively.

And polyunsaturated fats, which include common vegetable oils such as corn, soy, safflower, sunflower and canola, are absolutely the worst oils to cook with.

Why?

Three primary reasons:

1) Cooking your food in omega-6 vegetable oils produces a variety of very toxic chemicals, as well as forming trans-fats. Frying destroys the antioxidants in oil, actually oxidizing the oil, which causes even worse problems for your body than trans-fats.

Green Tea

Rich in polyphenols, including catechins, which reduce the growth of the new vessels needed for tumor growth and metastases, this is a great addition to your daily hot drink regime. Coffee, even decaf coffee is acid forming in the body, so consider replacing it with green tea. It is also a powerful antioxidant and detoxifier. It activates enzymes in the liver that eliminate toxins from the body and is said to facilitate the death of cancer cells by apoptosis. In laboratory tests it has been shown to enhance the effect so radiotherapy on cancer cells.

Seaweed

Consider eating seaweed. Molecules in seaweed can slow cancer growth, especially breast, prostate, skin and colon cancer. Fucoidan and Kombu seaweed help provoke cell death by apoptosis and stimulate immune cells.
Also a healthy thyroid helps keep breast cancer away. Your thyroid can suffer from chemo and radiation therapy so any support you give it can help. Seaweed is full of natural iodine. I buy the organic sea salad from a place in Ireland over the Internet. I place a handful in water just before making my smoothie. It rehydrates and then I rinse it off and toss it in with my veggies, avocado, green powder, hemp protein powder, chia seeds (super, super food) blueberries, rice milk and water. Then I blend the living daylights out of it!

Ginger

Garlic has been used medicinally for centuries and the sulphur compounds from this family of vegetables reduce the carcinogenic effects of over cooked meat. They promote apoptosis )cell death) in colon, breast, lung and prostate cancer as well as leukemia. Epidemiological studies suggest a reduction in kidney and prostate cancer in people who consume the most garlic.

There are lots of great books on the market that tell you exactly what to eat and not to eat to prevent and heal cancer. Amazon is full of them but Anticancer covers most of the bases. I often buy my books second hand on Amazon or EBay to save money. You can get some books for less than a pound!

VIT D

Vitamin D has shown preventative benefits for many diseases, including heart disease and diabetes, and can even reduce chronic pain. But when it comes to cancer, vitamin D is its worst enemy! Theories linking vitamin D deficiency to cancer have been tested and confirmed in more than 200 epidemiological studies, and understanding of its physiological basis stems from more than 2,500 laboratory studies.

Vitamin D has powerful effects when it comes to breast cancer to the degree that breast cancer is being described as a “vitamin D deficiency syndrome.” Of course, other lifestyle factors are also important in preventing cancer, such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, and managing stress. However, vitamin D’s critical importance seems to grow with every emerging

study.

The best way to optimize your vitamin D level is through sun exposure or a safe tanning bed as that virtually eliminates any risk of overdose. As a very general guide, you need to expose about 40 percent of your entire body to the sun for approximately 20 minutes between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm, when the sun is at its zenith.

VIT B12

The vitamin B12 is crucial to life and to general health, being involved in almost every cellular system in the body. Over 300 enzymatic reactions use this vitamin in some way. Apart from dementia, fatigue and heart problems, some cancers including breast cancer are known to be associated with lowered levels of this vitamin.

In recent years scientists have become more and more knowledgeable and concerned about Vitamin B-12, particularly for people over the age of 50 and/or those on strict vegetarian diets. Some 72 per cent of vegetarians are deficient in this vitamin, as it is most readily found in meat, cheese and eggs.

Lowered B-12 levels are not so much about what we eat, but far more to do with our ability to release the vitamin from our food. Lowered levels of beneficial bacteria, coupled with increased levels of microbes and particularly Helicobacter pylori weaken our ability to release the vitamin from the food we consume, especially as we age. This is true of other essential B vitamins too.

A particular concern is with those cancer patients who rush to change their diet as part of their personal cancer therapy programme, and become vegan or vegetarian. This can result in a further lowering of B-12 levels and it could be that their cancer was already associated with lowered levels of B-12. People who change their diet in this way may actually be compounding a problem. In these cases supplementation is almost certainly essential if only as insurance.

Also chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery all employ drugs and antibiotics, which can worsen the imbalance of beneficial bacteria and further, reduce the digestion and absorption of vitamin B-12. Supplementation in the short term with vitamin B-12 and other B vitamins like folic acid should be considered, along with supplementation with multi-strain probiotics seems equally important.

DIM – Diindolylmethane

Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower and kale, produce a natural compound called diindolylmethane (DIM) in the body during the digestion process. Studies have shown that DIM can slow the growth of tumor cells. It also may be able to kill cancer cells by preventing the growth of the blood vessels tumors need to grow and spread, and acting like an anti- estrogen therapy in hormone-sensitive tumors. For these reasons, scientists think that DIM may be an effective breast cancer treatment. STRESS MANAGEMENT

Stress fuels cancer by triggering a ‘master switch’ gene known as ATF3, which is expressed in response to stressful conditions in all types of cells. This allows the disease to spread, according to new research by Ohio State University.

Women who suffer stress are twice as likely to develop breast cancer, a study in Sweden also suggests. Worries about work and family, which lead to tension, fear, anxiety and sleep disturbance, appear to raise the risk of suffering the disease later in life.

The damaging effect of stress is on a par with recently documented dangers of taking HRT – which also doubles the risk of breast cancer. Doctors from the Sahlgrenska Academy in Gothenburg, Sweden, carried out a 24-year study of almost 1,500 women.

The group of healthy women aged 38 to 60 were examined by doctors 35 years ago, during 1968 and 1969. They were also questioned about their stress levels over the previous five years. Women had follow-up examinations during 1974, 1980 and 1992. After the final check-ups, doctors compared which women had suffered more breast cancer. Those who had reported stress for a month or more during the five years preceding the start of the study had double the risk. Other factors which would almost certainly increase the risk of disease – including smoking, weight, alcohol intake, age of first pregnancy and age at the menopause – were all taken into account. Yet still the increase in breast cancer risk remained, with stress the only obvious causal factor.

Cancer has many more causes than only being initiated by stressful events. But it does look like they are much more important in initiating cancer than anyone had previously thought. What is undoubtedly true is that stress knocks down the immune system significantly, which could certainly translate into accelerated growth of cancer cells. Continued stress from unresolved traumatic events inhibits your body’s ability to fight cancer.

How can we help relieve stress?

Wow! Those previous paragraphs were probably enough to push you over the edge and stress you out on their own! I am just ‘stressing’ a point (no pun intended) that anyone with any kind of cancer diagnosis or who is looking at prevention needs to address their relationship with stress and how they handle it. It will improve not only your life’s expectancy but it’s quality. It will also help your relationships with everyone around you. I personally really believe that it’s all very well and good addressing your diet and supplement regime etc. but that’s not going to be half as effective if you don’t take a long hard look at how you cope with stress.

Meditation

Having a strong and centered mind can only help improve your health and your ability to cope with what life is throwing at you at this time. Daily mediation practice can help this even if it’s only for 10 minutes.

· In a study of 60 breast cancer survivors, women who practiced meditation reduced the number and severity of hot flashes and also reported improvements in mood and sleep.

· A study of 63 people with rheumatoid arthritis found that mindfulness meditation helped to improve quality of life and reduce psychological distress.

· A study of 298 college students found that transcendental meditation helped students reduce stress and improve coping strategies.

· A “meta-analysis” of 10 studies found that mindfulness meditation improves the overall mental health of cancer patients.

Meditation prevents stress from getting into your system and releases accumulated stress that is already in your system.

Exercise

The word I dread and I still don’t do enough of this myself! However studies show

women who exercise for 30 minutes at least 3 times a week survive for longer than those who don’t. That’s quite shocking and just typing this makes me want to get off my lazy bum and get out for a big long walk.

Dr Brian Clement, co director of the Hippocrates Health Institute in the US says

‘The body heals eight times faster when you exercise regularly’

Exercise helps stimulate your lymph system. The primary function of the lymphatic system is to transport lymph, a clear, colorless fluid containing white blood cells that helps rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials.

We want that lymph flooding our body with wonderful white blood cells and removing toxins. If you don’t want to take up a gym membership or Zumba or a dance class or even can’t be bothered to go for a 30 minute walk, consider getting a rebounder.

Rebounding can cause a state of non-disease-induced neutrophillia, which is an increase in the number of white cells circulating through the body, particularly neutrophils, which are one of the types of white cells most responsible for destroying cancer cells. Parabens

If you have had breast cancer or are at risk of it you should try not use any products that contain anything that ends with the word paraben. If you’ve been diagnosed you may be aware of this already. I had to chuck literally every single cosmetic I owned out as they all contained parabens, even my Simple wipes and my Aveda products and my Origins face creams. Just because it’s marketed as ‘natural’ doesn’t’ mean it actually is. Check your ingredients.

Chlorella and Spiriulina

Spirulina is another form of algae that is sometimes confused with Chlorella. The fundamental difference between spirulina and chlorella is that spirulina is many thousands of years older and does not possess the hard cell wall that makes chlorella closer to being a plant than algae.

According to a study done in China,10 selenium-infused spirulina inhibited the growth of MCF-7 breast cancer cells but it’s also a great detoxifier when it comes to radiation exposure. Breast cancer leaves you exposed to so much radiation with the mammograms required. I’ve had many over the years and now I am expected to have one every year for the rest of my life! The toxic effects of mammogram radiation are finally being acknowledged as a significant factor in the development of breast cancer. Several recent studies have clearly shown that breast cancer screenings may be causing women more harm than good.

Mammograms use ionizing radiation at a relatively high dose, which can contribute to the mutations that can lead to breast cancer. You can get as much radiation from one mammogram as you would from 1,000 chest X-rays. Other Methods of Elimination

Taking Epsom salt baths helps draw out toxins from the skin. You need to put about a kilogram of them into your bath (you can buy them on eBay) It’s best to do this in the evening as not only does it draw out toxins it totally relaxes muscles and helps you sleep like a baby.

If you can, get an enema kit (Ebay or Amazon) as this is also great method for getting rid of toxins from your body. Consider having a professional colonic or two or three!

According to the British Dental Health Foundation, women with severe periodontal disease and missing teeth may be as much as 11 times more likely than women with healthy teeth and gums to develop breast cancer. The Karolinska Institute in Sweden examined the tooth and gum health of more than 3,000 women, 41 of whom developed breast cancer. These women were more likely to have experienced severe gum disease and tooth loss. Gum disease has been associated with not just breast cancer but also oral cancer, heart disease, diabetes and pregnancy complications.

I am convinced that having so many mammograms over the years due to having very lumpy fibrous breasts has contributed to my cancer diagnosis. There is no history of breast cancer in my family, I am the first and hopefully last.

RADIOTHERAPY Support whilst undergoing it.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, HBO, can help minimise side effects and even restore healthy tissue by promoting healing. The Royal Marsden is currently undertaking clinical trials, although research has been reported in the USA already. Whilst it seems advantageous to use it during radiation therapy, research also shows its benefits at a later stage too. It’s used to treat a number of side effects caused by radiotherapy including healing post radiotherapy wounds. The treatment floods the body with oxygen.

Selenium, isoflavones (citrus or soy) and astragalus, a Chinese herb, have all been shown in research studies to make radiotherapy more effective. Indeed MD Anderson Cancer Centre have research stating that astragalus ́doubles survival times ́ if taken with radiotherapy. Vitamin D is increasingly recommended by US and some UK hospitals and also seems to improve the success of the treatment programme..

Also a study from the University of Pennsylvania has shown consuming Flaxseed

reduces harm and can even repair damaged tissue. Recent research suggests a calorie restoration of up to 40% can improve the outcome of radiotherapy along with avoiding animal fats, dairy and glucose whilst eating a rainbow diet to nourish your body.

After radiation wash the area only in cold water and apply aloe vera gel also in clinical trials the herb calendula (you can buy it in a cream from any health food shop) beat the recommended drug used for such burns. Consider taking the supplement carnitine if fatigue is a problem. Italian doctors have identified the cause of fatigue during radiotherapy as low levels of carnitine circulating in the blood stream.

To help alleviate nausea from radiotherapy or chemotherapy an infusion of fresh ginger has been show to help. I like to mix it with lemon and a small amount of honey.

CHEMOTHERAPY

Here is some great information taken from the Cancer Active web site re how to support yourself when facing or going through chemotherapy.

1. Make sure you know everything about the chemotherapy drug your doctor is recommending. You will find new drugs covered on this web site in our A to Z guide (click here). The very latest cancer treatments can be obtained on the Medcastwebsite:

2. Ask your doctor why he/she is recommending chemotherapy. If they had cancer, would they treat themselves with this drug? How long have they been prescribing this treatment and to how many people? 3. What has the success rate been? Does the doctor expect the tumour to go completely, or just reduce in size? Do they think your cancer might become active again after treatment? If so, after what period of time? What else can be tried if the chemo doesn ́t work? Are there any clinical trials open, which may be suitable for you?

4. What are the risks in having the treatment? How will your doctor assess its effectiveness? What are the worst reported and also the least reported, side effects during and after this treatment?

5. Ask your doctor what action he will take if you are losing a lot of weight and

obviously not getting sufficient nutrition. Also, if you want to use herbal and natural remedies to help with the side effects, would he be prepared to work with you and discuss suitable treatments? Does he take any measures to support the immune system during treatment? If fatigue becomes a major problem, does he have methods for tackling it?

6. Prepare your body for the chemical onslaught: Take Astragalus, Cats Claw, Turmeric (curcumin) and echinacea to boost your immune system (all available in the independent Natural Selection shop – click here ). Try a corrective colloidal vitamin and mineral supplement. There is a lot of research on the benefits of medicinal mushrooms to improve chemotherapy results and cut side-effects. Eat a healthier diet cutting sodium-rich foods and eating more potassium-rich ones. Cut down on animal fats especially cows dairy, saturated fats and trans fats. They poison the lymph and inhibit the immune system.

7. ICON integrative Cancer and Oncology News’s integrative nurse Patricia Peat suggests consulting a holistic practitioner, nutritionist or medical herbalist as soon as possible to have a settled regime before commencing chemotherapy. But remember to tell your specialist what complementary treatments you are taking/having in case of possible reactions between the treatments. If he tells you that something is contra-indicated though, ask for the research evidence.

9. Next stage – During Chemotherapy, drink up to three litres of glass bottled or reverse osmosis filtered water a day and take your anti-sickness medication regularly to prevent nausea building up. 11. Try to avoid all cows ́ dairy, saturated and polyunsaturated fats and spicy foods.
12. Antioxidant supplementation produces huge controversy. You are encouraged to eat lots of fruit and vegetables but then, at the same time, the oncologist says that antioxidant supplements will protect the cancer cells during chemo. As chemo- drugs become more targeted this argument should end. However there are a number of natural compounds that have been shown in research to increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy and improve survival rates. These include astragalus, vitamin D, green tea and medicinal mushrooms. Curcumin, cod liver oil, ginger, garlic and aloe vera will all calm down inflammation and bad eicosdanoid production. Eat whole greens and grains, seeds and nuts – and take vitamin K, a B complex and a multi-strain probiotic.

13. On the subject of medicinal mushrooms, Dr. Julian Kenyon, from the Dove

Clinic, advises protecting the cell mediated immune function with them. He says, “The one to take is Coriolus (as a powder), 4 grams, three times a day.” MGN-3 works in a similar immune boosting way. But these are expensive. You should also try to avoid an acid body.

14. Avoid all alcohol as your liver doesn’t need any more toxins. It needs strengthening. Natural herbs such as 200mgs of milk thistle (Silybum marianum) and soya lecithin in research help to protect and help to “defat it. Supporting of the liver function is also helped by the use of N-Acetyl Cysteine, an amino acid which raises glutathione levels and helps the livers detoxification pathways. Focus on magnesium-rich foods. 40 per cent of the population is deficient.

15. Ask a cranial osteopath or acupuncturist to rebalance the energy flow around the body and help with nausea. Try yoga too.

16. Force yourself to walk around and take exercise, even though you probably won’t want to. This does not have to be strenuous but it does need to be daily according to a number of recent research studies. Yoga and Tai chi are not strenuous but have massive benefits even when it’s the first time you do them. As a minimum do 20 minutes deep breathing exercises every day. Get out in the fresh air.

17. Astragalus, Cats claw, Echinacea and Cassie tea (Essiac) can all be taken after treatment is finished, to re-stimulate the immune system. Keep yeasts in check with Pau Darco, oregano, cinnamon and wormwood, plus a multi-strain probiotic. Adults can also take wild yam to boost their DHEA levels; everyone can eat salads and carbohydrate in the evening (carbohydrates and salads aid seratonin production, which in turn stimulates melatonin levels and helps sleep and fight hormonally driven cancers).

18. Fatigue comes with every chemo treatment! Yes you can and should rest. Moreover, research by Italian scientists has identified that it is linked to loss of carnitine in the blood as a result of the chemotherapy toxins. In tests (albeit involving just 50) patients given a high energy drink containing levocarnitine 90% of the patients no longer felt tired just a week after starting the drink.

WEB SITES THAT SUPPORT YOUR JOURNEY Kris Carr

One of the best sites for support I have found is Kris Carr’s Crazy Sexy Life site. She was diagnosed at 23 with a rare incurable stage four cancer of her liver and lungs and decided to deal with it alternatively and is just inspirational. She could not have chemo and said no to bypass operations. She made a film of her journey called Crazy Sexy Cancer. She has written books and even been on Opera. 10 years on she is here, healthy and living with her cancer and travels the world giving talks about what she has learned. Her cancer has not grown or spread and she looks amazing.

It’s not a ‘diet’ book it’s a survival manual for anyone looking to improve their health with our without cancer. Dr Lorraine Day

Another amazing cancer survivor is Dr Lorraine Day. She was an orthopedic surgeon who discovered she had breast cancer and decided to go down the alternative route much to the anger and disgust of her colleagues and the establishment. Healing Cancer World Summit

I highly recommend you take a look at the Healing Cancer World Summit 2012 web site. Yes I know it’s now 2014 but they interviewed some of the world’s most well known traditional and alternative doctors, practitioners and survivors who are taking an alternative approach to healing cancer with amazing results. Whist it was happening it was free to listen to the interviews. Now it’s over you have to pay $49/£30 to download all the interviews and extra content. You also get to give all the content for free to 3 other friends, as they want it shared out there. It’s invaluable and much easier than trailing through various web sites and books as I have done to find the same. I just listened to them whilst I was getting on with other stuff. I believe it’s worth the investment.

AND FINALLY

Anita Moorjani say’s she thinks it’s fear that causes most disease, so try not to live your life based on fear (I know first hand this is not so easy) I took up comedy improvisation classes to help overcome my fears and to face them in a fun and positive way and laugher has been proven to improve your immune system. It’s worked for me. I’ve loved it. Take this as an opportunity to do things differently. I read a quote not long after being diagnosed that has stuck with me

ever since ‘If you always do what you have always done then you always get what you always got’

Also many studies have shown that above all else stress is one of the biggest causes of Cancer and many other diseases. Be kind to yourself. Look at when and where you get stressed and try and do things differently. Consider mediation, yoga, tai chi, going for walks in the countryside, giving yourself permission to just relax and watch funny movies or read a book. Try and cull people from your life who bring you down, drain you or are unsupportive and learn to PUT YOU FIRST!

Finally although all this information is relevant, it’s important to listen to yourself and trust yourself. You know what’s best for you. Take time and space to hear your own inner voice. Do what you can or what appeals to you from the information above but listen to your own inner guide on what’s best for you. Every human being is different and every cancer and cause of the cancer is different. Trust your own instincts about what you feel resonates with you and don’t worry about what doesn’t. It’s very hard to do it all and if you are going down the ‘alternative route’ you don’t want doing that to cause your body and soul just as much stress as heading off for chemo or to the chemist for Tamoxifen. Whichever route you go down ideally the information in this document can give you some guidance regarding what’s out there to support you on your journey.

I really hope some of this helps. It took me a very long time and lots of hours of reading and research to find this all out, let alone to write it all down. I wanted to save you this time when time is so precious and now you will be armed with information that can really support you and your loved ones and can help you make the decisions that are right for you. More than anything I hope that it will give you hope.
