This is my personal experience.  When your child is low, you too are down, struggling for answers, looking for bits of the jigsaw, desperately trying to make it alright.

The fact is that it often isn’t alright.

Violence, depression, insomnia and self harm are now familiar to so many families.

I spend my time as a nutritionist finding ways for my clients to reduce their stress.  However often what they are most anxious about is their children.  They are struggling too with the fact that there seems to be no way out of what can seem like a downward cycle.

So I have decided to share my knowledge on this subject.  I am going to give a talk on Thursday 30th March at Exeter Street Hall, Brighton.

My main aim for this talk is to acknowledge the fact that right now so many families are struggling on so many levels with children and teenagers and to propose a road map forward.

I see that currently are children are facing:

  • poor self esteem
  • low concentration
  • behaviour issues
  • insomnia
  • lack of communication

In this talk I will look primarily at several quick wins . But I will also be looking at why there might be more work needed and why a consistent approach is so necessary.

I want to open your minds to looking at different strategies for dealing with behaviour.  I want you to leave the talk fired up with ideas to try.

Most of all I am looking to offer options, where it can, quite frankly feel like there are none.

These words have been sitting on my desk after I wrote them down some time ago.

Today they came back to me strongly.  The idea that we can keep asking for things and praying for them to happen, but what works most effectively is to create your image in your head, hold your dream and craft it into your very being.

If you want to increase your wealth you must first act wealthy, be rich, act with abundance and gratitude for all that you have in this lifetime.  Give thanks for the rich rewards that you dream of as if you already possess them.

It kind of suggests a “Fake it until you make it attitude”. and when I think of this kind of acting out I am always drawn back to re-read the work of Florence Scovel Shinn:

All things whatsoever ye ask for in prayer, believing, ye shall receive…  You must act as if you had already received” Florence Scovel Shinn

So hold your head high, put fresh sheets on the bed, soak in an exotic fragrance, don your best frock  and pay money out happily and generously, because you young woman are in the money! x

Faith, Hope, Love

These three words are my mantra for 2017.

I have adopted them after they appeared in an interpretation of an Huan Yin card that I drew from the beautiful oracle pack by Alana Fairchild.

I also cast the I Ching and drew a hexagram that alluded to the meeting of heaven and earth.

You could say that I was going overboard on mystical input, but the two readings reflect my energy right now.

The culmination of these I see is spirituality; a need for my soul to spread its wings.

So this year I have decided that instead of trying to push forwards with lots of energy and enthusiasm; I am going to try a different tack. I am going to slow down and be more open to spiritual assistance and guidance, work with more intuition, prayer and most of all love.

I had an incredible cosmic gift last year: A three day all expenses paid trip to Venice for myself and my daughter.  I had manifested other things too but this was by far my biggest show yet!

I have decided that this year the universe will decide my direction.  Instead of following each and everything that presents itself to me.  I will ask for direction, guidance and pray for blessings.

So I say to you perhaps there is another way forward this year, chart your course (generally speaking), set your sails and let the wind blow you (rather than sticking on the outboard motor!).

That way you’ll be adopting the cosmic Law of Least Effort too!

Why not salt? and what is human gel?

Salt, hydration and those all important vegetables

I have been drawn to write this article because I have been reading an incredible post authored by Kathryn Alexander:

Her post is comprehensive and packed with detail, here is my summary:

 

If water follows salt and we need to drink more water to rehydrate, then surely we will need to take in more salt to help us get the water into our cells?

It just isn’t that simple.

Kathryn describes a “perivascular space”, between your cells and your circulatory vessels – this is where hydration is key.

Water will be attracted to the sodium but not the all important connective tissues that provide this perivascular space.

Taking on board too much sodium can also mean that potassium is excreted.  At this point the balance of electrolytes can be upset; without enough potassium in the cell, sodium will move in…as water follows sodium, it enters the cell (not the perivascular space) and the cell:

 “becomes water-logged and cannot “breathe” as it is unable to take up oxygen or produce energy. Symptoms of water-logging within the body (fluid retention and oedemas) is a pathological sign and does not represent the opposite of dehydration”

What is really important instead, to achieve hydration, is to build up your “human gel”. Connective tissue is important here, connective tissue actually includes your bones, tendons and joints depending on the density of the fibres it contains.  Connective tissue is a matrix of protein fibres wrapped inside a polysaccharide gel.

This is where the plant based diet comes in.  Dietary fibre from vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes provides the sugars that we need to produce our human gel, that all important polysaccharide gloop.

Without adequate gel and hydration the disease picture shows up with shrinkage, wasting, aching and pain:

  • vertebrae, disk and joint issues,
  • dry membranes
  • toxicity issues as cells become disconnected and lose efficiency at taking in nutrients and releasing waste.


Glucosamine can be a useful supplement to take, to encourage production of hyaluronic acid – human gel! It is also well known for promoting healthy cartilage.

Kathryn also explains:

“In the perivascular spaces, if the ground substance shrinks then nutrients can’t get to the cells, and the cells starve, and toxins get trapped in the collapsed matrix. This generates an immune response: the circulation and the migration of inflammatory immune cells is increased to the area  to remove the toxic debris and dead cells. The problem with chronic dehydration, or a lack of ground substance, is that the area can become vulnerable to sustained inflammatory activity which will generate a continuous supply of free radicals. This is when cellular DNA can come under attack which may generate the development of auto-antibodies and the onset of autoimmune disease. “

Fatty acids are another key component of this picture of rehydration;Fatty acids help to form our cell membranes, causing it to be more supple and have the ability to “hold water” on the outside of your cells.

Freshly ground flax seeds daily are a great gentle place to start.

Of course there will also be people for whom low sodium is a problem so do get levels checked if symptoms persist.

Getting in the greens! Nettle Gnocchi

With this years spring equinox just around the corner and daffodils bobbing their heads outside the window it is definitely time to awaken the spring in you.

This weeks recipe has been brought to you by my gorgeous daughter Zoe, who was inspired to make nettle gnocchi for lunch today.  Yes you heard me right; good old stinging nettles picked fresh (and very carefully!) from the garden.

So the recipe:

Nettle Gnocchi

  • 600g potatoes, diced into small pieces
  • 400g gluten free flour
  • a good handful of nettles, grabbed with a thick pair of gloves on! rinsed
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon Himalayan rock salt
  1. Boil the potatoes for 10 mins or until soft
  2. Mash them with a fork and mix in the nettles with a teaspoon of salt
  3. Stir in the beaten eggs
  4. Add flour and stir in until the mixture starts to come together
  5. Roll out on a board into a sausage shape
  6. Cut into disks
  7. Boil for 3 minutes or until the pieces start to bob up to the surface of the pan.

I served up ours with some tomato sauce made by frying off celery, onion, garlic, parsley, grated carrot for a few minutes and then bubbling away with some tomatoes for 20-30 mins.

I am sure that you could get this by the kids.  If you don’t think that they could I am sure they’d love to get involved picking the tinging nettles and hopefully inspired to eat them by the sheer craziness of it all.

A peculiar history of the enema

Around the world there are (not surprisingly) few public monuments to the enema.

However, make a journey to the southern Russian city of Zheleznovodsk and you’ll find just that in one of its many spas.

The Mashuk Aqua-Therm spa in Zheleznovodsk is one of a multitude in the region that routinely administer saltwater enemas to treat digestive complaints, so it apparently seemed natural to the owners to commission a $42,000, 800-pound brass monument depicting a giant enema syringe supported by three little angels, for display in the grounds.

Compiling these weekly emails for you takes me on some fantastical voyages of discovery, but this one almost certainly takes the cake.

First, let’s begin with some proper science.

What do you think would happen to your gut microbiome if you flushed yourself out with an enema or oral laxative?

You’d be asked to do this if you ever required a colonoscopy, for example, in which case you’d be asked to knock back a strong laxative solution the day before the procedure.

This can often have spectacular results, and in fact it’s what Richard Sprague did, reported by him in a December 2015 uBiome blog post.

Although Richard wasn’t preparing for a colonoscopy, he was just interested in what might happen to his gut bacteria, so he had them tested before and after a thorough cleanse, as well as on the day of the clean-out itself (brave man).

While Richard did notice a brief change in the amounts and ratios of his bacteria, in just two weeks everything had returned to the way it was before the cleanse.

Actually his results echoed a 2014 study at the University of Helsinki in Finland showing that a gut-cleanse of the experiment’s participants resulted in a temporary 31-fold decrease in microbial load.

Some individuals took a month to get back to normal, but most did return to a stabilised position again.

Now this may not be so surprising when you consider that much of the bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract is well and truly embedded in its mucus lining.

So while loose bacteria milling around in the tubes can get flushed out fairly easily, the embedded stuff stays put.

Enemas have been around for a long time. In fact the ancient Egyptians used them 4,000 years ago, referring to what we’d call a proctologist as a “nery phuyt” which loosely translates to “Shepherd of the Anus”.

Indeed.

And of course, as you might expect given his exalted position, a Pharaoh had his own private enema maker, known in all seriousness as the “Keeper of the Royal Rectum”.

You won’t find many of those on LinkedIn.

If this isn’t extraordinary enough, let us jump forward to 18th-century Britain where, and I kid you not, tobacco smoke enemas were all the rage, particularly when it came to reviving people who’d almost drowned.

An amazing story is told of a man whose wife had been pulled from the water, thought to have died from drowning.

Apparently a passing sailor suggested that the husband should insert the stem of a pipe (actually the sailor’s own) into his wife’s, um, back passage, cover the pipe’s bowl with a piece of perforated paper, then blow into it vigorously.

Detailed accounts suggest that the woman was, in this remarkable manner, miraculously revived.

(Unfortunately history doesn’t reveal what she said to her husband as she came round.)

Thereafter the Royal Humane Society genuinely installed tobacco smoke enema resuscitation kits along the banks of the River Thames, seriously considering them as an alternative to artificial respiration.

Some tobacco smoke enema therapy involved the practitioner – just like the unfortunate husband above – physically blowing into a tube “connected” to the patient.

Of course, as you might imagine, knowing the difference between exhaling and inhaling was vital.

Wider use of the tobacco smoke therapy as a treatment for cholera had the extremely unpleasant side-effects of infecting the practitioner when they accidentally sucked in air rather than blew it out.

Apparently the theory behind tobacco smoke enemas was that they warmed and stimulated victims of near-drowning.

Unfortunately such a promising technique was snuffed out in 1811 when people of course realised just how toxic nicotine was.

Not too lucky to survive being nearly drowned, only to then die from a nicotine overdose.

Hats off to the husband of the nearly-drowned woman of course, but also commiserations to the passing sailor who very probably had to kiss his pipe goodbye.

So to speak.

Cold hands and cold feet; symptoms that your brain is failing

How to protect your brain health by boosting your circulation.

Are you someone that has to keep their socks on in bed all night?  Do you struggle to keep warm even when the weather is not extreme?  Are your finger nails weak or splitting?  Do you have a chronic toenail fungal infection? Then this post is for you.  Because it seems that just wearing extra layers is simply masking a problem that is far more serious.  Have you realised for instance, that this poor blood flow to your extremities is a reflection of the inadequate nourishment of your brain too.

Indicators that your brain is suffering can include:

  • Memory loss
  • Brain fog
  • Balance and coordination problems
  • Anger and violence issues
  • Dizziness
  • Depression

Your brain needs constant nourishment to stay healthy; critical to this are oxygen, glucose and of course water.  Stimulation in the form of mental gymnastics and exercise also plays its part, so too adequate neurotransmitters.

When blood is not getting to your hands and feet, it is a sign that your brain is also getting an inadequate supply of the water, oxygen and glucose that it needs.  Without an abundant source of these critical factors, your brain will suffer and start to perish.  The results can be very visible.

Six simple strategies to improve blood flow and circulation to your brain and hands and feet:

  1. Stay hydrated
  2. Stop the peaks and troughs of unbalanced blood sugar levels by eating regularly, ensuring adequate high quality protein such as nuts and seeds (if not allergic or intolerant) at each meal and snack time.  You may need to eat 5-6 times per day initially.
  3. Lower your resistance to insulin.  The following are just a few items that have been shown to be effective at reducing insulin resistance in the body; apples, bitter melon (supplement), chromium, magnesium and zinc.
  4. Exercise regularly to get that blood flowing round your system.  Remember that the sedentary desk job is not doing you any favours.
  5. Lower your stress.  The degradation that stress causes your brain is huge; causing inflammation, damage to the protective blood/brain barrier and impaired blood flow.  So book in unwind time, say “no” more, eat the right foods, get to the root cause of health complaints to ensure that your body is operating at the lowest level of stress that you can honestly manage.
  6. Balance your blood pressure.  If you have low blood pressure, increase your sea salt or Himalayan salt intake and consider a glychrrhiza supplement to bring it back up to normal levels .  If you have high blood pressure, omit salt completely from your diet, including all hidden salt until you get it back in range. Consider your diet and ensure that it is clean and supportive.  Dig deeper to find out underlying causes of blood pressure issues.

Can I say at this stage that these are very basic strategies for improving blood flow.  But the whole picture can be a lot more complicated than this.

“I’m walking on sunshine!” Vitamin D and autoimmunity.

When you go outdoors in the summertime, eat certain foods or take a supplement you should be stocking up on your body’s stores of this vital vitamin.

If you wear suntan lotion, do an indoors job, or don’t get out much, have poor digestion or don’t supplement – you could be increasing your risk of developing (or exacerbating) autoimmune disease symptoms along with other diseases.  Also remember that the darker your skin, the harder it will be for you to absorb the vitamin D from sunlight.

Some symptoms of vitamin D deficiency include:

  • muscle/joint pain and weakness.
  • bone pain.
  • tiredness or fatigue.
  • depression.

Vitamin D has a role in regulating our immune system:

“has been shown to be involved in the prevention of certain pathological immune reactions leading to various autoimmune disorders (Type 1 diabetes, colitis, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and graft rejection) and asthma (and other atopic diseases)”

The question is once you have an autoimmune condition, can you use vitamin D to get better?

In an Australian Study on Lupus patients, they decided that yes, indeed you can improve your symptoms by bringing your levels up to normal:

In systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) low vitamin D status is associated with higher disease activity and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), while over time, an increase in serum vitamin D levels correlates with reduced SLE activity.

I don’t suggest that you immediately go and buy yourself a supplement.  I do suggest that you absolutely make the best of the sunshine when it is there in your life.  It is the very best form of Vitamin D for your body.  Yet I do suggest that you get yourself tested; and while you are at it also test for:

  • B12
  • Ferritin
  • Alkaline Phosphatase

Too much Vitamin D can also be detrimental, (although relatively hard to do).

If you choose to supplement, use Vitamin D3(rather than 2) it is much better utilised.

Hi All,

Ask yourself today; if those Disney films were right after all,  just what would be my happily ever after?  Spend some time today getting to grips with that.

So we were in a supermarket and my children spotted the bottles of squirty cream.  All at once I was caught between my childhood memories of guzzling down that frothy stuff straight from the can,  and the brakes that my own adult mind put on it (it’s full of crap and an aerosol too).

I apologised to my children, explained that I would have loved to buy them the can but just couldn’t bring myself to.  Amazingly, each one of them accepted my explanation and chose something else instead (The Law of Detachment!).

That very night we went to a barbecue for my husband’s work.

One of his colleagues, was making hot banana and chocolate splits with cream, (you’ve guessed it).  At the end of the night, he handed my children two, almost full cans, of that very same squirty cream.

I was absolutely gob smacked and have carried that sheer manifestation as my guide from that day.

What made that story truly amazing and even more incredible,  was that  at that time I was teaching my children the concept of universal laws.

The law that I was teaching that day was the very one that I bring to you now; The Law of Intention and Desire:

“The fifth spiritual law says that inherent in every desire are the mechanics for its fulfillment, and these mechanics apply to desires reaching far beyond the physical body.”  Deepak Chopra

I introduced it to them through the principles of The 7 Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra.

So from this concept of intention and desire comes:

“be careful what you wish for”

“think before you speak”

You see the mind is very impersonal and will translate your thoughts quite literally.

So if you are trapped in a cycle of depression, pain and despair, re-frame that image right away and work really hard to change your thought patterns.

There are techniques that you can employ to help you with this.  Think vision boards, mood boards, affirmations and quotes.

Let today be the day that you swing into really positive action.  Print out and cut out images.  Create the life of health, wealth and happiness that you deserve.  Then step back, release (important), and let the miracles happen!

A daily trick to bathe your cells in oxygen.

Hi All,

I was so excited when I saw this presentation from Dr Michael Greger on the power of beetroot.  It has been shown to raise oxygenation levels in leg muscle tissue and lower blood pressure.  With this mighty red root, the possibilities for health are endless.  I immediately thought of patients with chronic fatigue and of athletes, cancer patients and those with debilitating pain.

 

Beetroot, delivering oxygen at a cellular level will prove to be a health turnaround for many.  You don’t even have to have beetroot:
